The Sea Lion Rock Detour

There are lots of places to get into trouble along California's Lost Coast. One of the easiest places is about 0.8 miles north of Sea Lion Gulch. At this point, there is a rocky headland which is impassable at most tide levels. At youtube there is a video of some people trying to get around this point. Also, at the LCT Ranger Myspace page, there are some more photos with labels of this dangerous location.

When you get to the "hat rock", as seen in these photos (if headed south from Mattole), it is essential to go left and up the small creek, following cairns and other trail makers to a high route that detours this rock.

Walking north from Cooskie, the hat rock is also visible before getting into trouble. There is a marked trail to a gate... go through the gate and continue uphill watching for signs and markers.
